MGGB – End of the season

Dear Members,

Last Thursday we held the last Dinner of the 2024/25 season and, for those who were not there, it was a remarkable evening with Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor in Chief of the Economist. Zanny shared with us a lens through which to read the world, and quite simply capture everything a Country or a Business needs to be aware of!

We were literally in awe of her clarity and ability to provide a critical insight with such flair. A great end to our speakers series; and as my season as Chair comes to an end, I thought it would be good to  share a summary of our Speakers, Membership & Council Updates.

  • Our first speaker, Tom Ilube CBE, shared candid stories on racism and allyship, reminding us of the importance of leadership in all its forms.
Sir Dave Lewis offered wisdom on integrating business and sustainability, reaffirming that actions speak louder than words.
  • Brent Hoberman, interviewed by Evan Davis, explored the dynamic worlds of Tech and AI, especially in the context of recent US elections, pondering whether Elon Musk would be the new Rupert Murdoch, and suggesting that AI might already be influencing public opinion.
  • December was particularly special, marked by a Christmas celebration featuring Mark De Lisser and Vicky McClure, who, alongside Our Dementia Choir, demonstrated the power of song. The entire Claridge’s ballroom singing ‘Last Christmas’ embodied the spirit of MGGB and created a memorable moment. We also made a charity donation of  £5,000 to the Choir.
  • John Boumphrey shared his 3 leadership principles at Amazon and the importance of serving communities through business.
  • Jennifer Quigley Jones and Eleanor Mills enlightened us on digital media, influencers, and entrepreneurial journeys at all ages.
  • Andria Vidler discussed the remarkable transformation of the National Lottery, where we all win, by supporting the thousands of community projects across the Country.
  • Jeff Dodds provided insights into leading a global net-zero sport, emphasizing the importance of recovery, alongside training and competition for peak performance.
  • Sir Chris Bryant – Minister for the Creative industries, shared his passion and vision for the industry, in a rare mix of humour, wisdom and charm. As the government unveiled the Industrial strategy last week, we can see now he was not just charming but also useful; given the prominent role for the Advertising sector and focused investments, widely welcomed in the industry.

Over the past 75 years, our Club members have shaped and continue to shape the conversation, practice, progress, and creativity of marketing in Great Britain. This season, we have welcomed 10 new members to the club. It’s inspiring to see our membership reflect the vibrant diversity of today’s marketing, media, tech and business leaders.

We have also invited Ellie Norman – CMO of Formula E racing, to join the Council and contribute to the future of the Club, and want to wish Meg Farren all the best, for her new role in the USA.

Our speakers have been inspiring, candid, sometimes polarising, yet always generous with their time insights and expertise. You and your guests have contributed with thoughtful questions, heartfelt Vote of Thanks, constructive feedback, new friendships, and the unique MGGB convivial atmosphere we all cherish.

Liv & Charlotte – the absolute superstars of the Club, have helped us all enjoy the dinners without a glitch. Along with Claridge’s who once again have shown their care for the Club with their attentive hospitality and delicious food.

Finally, I want to thank you for the warm support to me as Chair. It’s fair to say I started off with a mix of trepidation and excitement and ended feeling very fortunate to have been able to experience the Club so closely.

As I hand over the baton to Zaid Al-Qassab, incoming Chair and Global CEO of M&C Saatchi, I know next season will be even better, and can’t wait for the first dinner on Wednesday 10th September. Which will be a week later than usual to accommodate schools starting back.

Wishing you and your loved ones, a great rest of the summer.

Grazie!

Alessandra
